In the Klaviyo vs Mailchimp choice, pick Klaviyo if you run an online store. It wins when most email revenue comes from flows tied to browsing and purchase data. Pick Mailchimp if you send newsletters and simple sequences for a service business, B2B firm or nonprofit. Mailchimp costs less to start and is easier to learn. Both free plans cap out at 250 contacts as of October 2026.

Every price and limit below comes from the two vendors' own pricing and help pages, checked in October 2026. Prices are in US dollars. Mailchimp's own page says offer terms can change without notice, so confirm your list size on each pricing slider before you sign up.

What is the main difference between Klaviyo and Mailchimp?

The difference is the data each tool is built around. Klaviyo starts from the customer profile and the store events attached to it. Viewed a product, added to cart, placed an order and the order value all sit on the profile and can trigger a flow. Its free plan already includes revenue attribution for campaigns, so you see dollars per send from day one.

Mailchimp starts from the audience and the campaign. You build a list, design an email and send it, with automation flows layered on top in the paid plans. Predictive segments and generative AI sit on Standard and Premium, and Essentials stops at four flow steps.

That design choice decides most of the comparison. A store that wants "people who bought twice but not in 90 days" gets it faster in Klaviyo. A consulting firm that wants a clean monthly newsletter, three team logins and phone support has less to set up in Mailchimp.

Klaviyo's pricing page now groups plans into modules: Marketing, Data and Analytics, Service, and AI agents. Paid email starts at $20 a month for 500 active profiles. The Klaviyo billing guide lists the add-on starting prices.

Mailchimp keeps four tiers. Essentials starts at $13 a month, Standard at $20 and Premium at $350, each shown as introductory pricing for the first 12 months. Seats grow with the tier: 1 on Free, 3 on Essentials, 5 on Standard and unlimited on Premium. Lists of 10,000 or more contacts get 15 percent off the first 12 months, and nonprofits can request a 15 percent discount.

Neither vendor prints a full price table for larger lists. Both use a slider, and the third-party reviews ranking for this search disagree with each other by $25 or more at 10,000 contacts. Enter your real list size on both pricing pages the week you decide.

What counts as a contact on each bill?

Billing rules move the bill more than the sticker price. The Klaviyo active profile guide defines an active profile as any profile that can be emailed. That includes customers who gave an email at checkout without opting in. Suppressed profiles stay in the account and do not count. If you pass your tier, Klaviyo moves you to a tier that covers the count in the next billing cycle.

Mailchimp bills on your peak contact total during the billing period, according to its help page on additional charges. Archived and cleaned contacts do not count. Go over the limit and Mailchimp bills add-on contact blocks automatically. On Standard, each extra block of 1,000 contacts adds 12,000 email sends.

For example, say a candle shop in Austin has 6,000 profiles, and 1,800 of them have not opened an email in 12 months. In Klaviyo, suppressing those 1,800 brings the active count to 4,200. Then pick the lower tier or turn on auto-downgrade, since a lower count does not lower the plan by itself. In Mailchimp, archiving them works the same way, but only if it happens before the peak in that billing period. Run the cleanup in the first week of the cycle on either platform.

Which is better for ecommerce, Klaviyo or Mailchimp?

Klaviyo is the better pick for most online stores. Its flows run on store events, its text messages share the same profile, and its Reviews add-on works with Shopify and WooCommerce. Build a cart abandonment flow first. The Techno Mantra guide on how to reduce cart abandonment covers what that flow should say.

Price the add-ons against orders before you buy them. Say a Shopify skincare store has a $45 average order and a 30 percent margin, so each order earns $13.50 in gross profit. The $100 Marketing Analytics add-on then needs 8 extra orders a month to pay for itself. If the store cannot trace 8 orders to better segments, it should stay on the base email plan.

Mailchimp still works for a store with a small list that sends a weekly promotion and a welcome series. If you have not picked a store platform yet, read the Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison for small stores first. Klaviyo's depth shows most on those two.

Is Mailchimp better for service businesses and nonprofits?

Mailchimp is the better pick when there is no cart. Its plan limits are built around teams and audiences: 3 to 5 seats on the middle tiers, up to 5 audiences on Standard and phone support on Premium. Klaviyo's strongest features assume orders and product views that a law firm or a charity does not have.

Say a 10-person accounting firm in Denver has 3,000 contacts. It sends one newsletter a month and a five-email onboarding sequence for new clients. Essentials caps automation at four flow steps, so the sequence does not fit. Standard does, with up to 200 flows and 12 sends per contact a month, or 36,000 emails. That covers the newsletter and the sequence with room to spare, so Standard is the plan to buy.

Many service firms also keep leads and clients in a CRM. The sync between the CRM and the email tool decides how clean your segments stay. Read what a CRM does for a small business before you choose.

Segmentation

Testing

A/B testing included free, per Klaviyo

Multivariate testing on Premium

For a store, the free-plan flows decide it: you can build and test a welcome flow in Klaviyo before paying a dollar. For a service firm on Mailchimp, Standard is the real starting tier, because Essentials automation is too limited for anything beyond a two-email welcome.

Which platform handles SMS better?

Klaviyo sells text messages as a main channel next to email. The free plan includes $5 of mobile messages a month, and paid mobile plans are prepaid monthly amounts such as $15 or $25. Unused spend does not roll over. Skipped and inbound texts are free, and one SMS segment holds 160 characters, or 70 with an emoji.

Mailchimp sells SMS as an add-on on Essentials and Standard, with SMS and MMS on Premium. Klaviyo also lists WhatsApp, with a $5 free monthly allowance on dollar-based pricing, and its comparison page says Mailchimp lacks WhatsApp, RCS and mobile push. If texts will carry a large share of your promotions, Klaviyo keeps email and SMS on one profile and one report.

How do you switch from Mailchimp to Klaviyo?

Klaviyo's migration notes say contacts, lists and email engagement history sync automatically, while templates, forms and flows have to be rebuilt. Plan the move in this order.

  1. Archive contacts with no opens in 12 months, so you do not pay for them on either platform.
  2. Authenticate your sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC before the first send. The guide to setting up DMARC covers the DNS records.
  3. Connect your store and let the profile history sync.
  4. Rebuild flows in revenue order: welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, then post-purchase.
  5. Run both platforms for one billing cycle and compare open, click and revenue numbers.
  6. Cancel the old plan at the end of its cycle, after the last scheduled campaign has gone out.

Expect a dip in inbox placement while mailbox providers learn the new sending pattern. The steps in how to improve email deliverability keep that dip short, starting with sending to your most engaged contacts first.

Either free plan; Klaviyo if you sell online

Add the add-ons you expect to use in the first six months before comparing totals. A cheaper sticker price loses if the other platform recovers more orders in that time.

Start by exporting your list, counting contacts who opened in the last 12 months, and pricing both platforms on that number. The Techno Mantra email marketing team sets up Klaviyo and Mailchimp accounts for US businesses, plus Canadian and Australian clients. The work covers migrations, domain authentication and the first flows. The accounts stay in your name. Send your list size and goals through the contact page or to info@technomantraa.com, and every inquiry gets a reply within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

At the entry level, slightly. Klaviyo email plans start at $20 a month for 500 active profiles, while Mailchimp Essentials starts at $13 a month as a 12-month introductory price. Klaviyo add-ons such as Marketing Analytics at $100 a month widen the gap, so compare quotes at your list size.

Yes. Klaviyo lists more than 350 pre-built integrations, including WooCommerce and other store platforms. Some features are narrower: its Reviews add-on supports only Shopify and WooCommerce stores.

No. Mailchimp says archived and cleaned contacts do not count toward your contact limit. It bills on the peak contact total in each billing period, so archive inactive contacts before that period starts rather than at the end.

Only for testing. As of October 2026 it allows 250 contacts, 500 sends a month with a 250-a-day cap, one user, no automation flows and email support for the first 30 days. A list that adds 50 contacts a week passes the cap in five weeks.

Mailchimp offers more channels. Essentials and Standard get 24/7 email and chat, and Premium adds phone and priority support. Klaviyo gives paid customers email and chat, while free accounts get email support for the first 60 days.
