Shopify Plus is worth it for a growing store when it needs a feature only Plus offers: custom checkout steps, more than three B2B catalogs, more than 10 inventory locations or several regional stores. On fees alone, Plus pays for itself only above about $9.6 million a year in Shopify Payments online sales. Below that, most single-brand stores get more value from Advanced at $299 a month.
The question "is Shopify Plus worth it" comes up after a call from a Shopify sales rep, or when a competitor moves up. Two checks answer it. The first is the fee math on your own sales. The second is a list of features you would use in the next 12 months.

What Shopify Plus costs in October 2026
The Shopify Plus pricing page lists two terms. A one-year term starts at $2,500 a month, and a three-year term costs $2,300 a month, both in US dollars. Shopify's pricing FAQ says a Plus subscription can run for one or three years, with cancellation allowed once the term ends.
Cost line | Shopify Advanced | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
Monthly subscription | $299 billed yearly, $399 billed monthly | $2,300 on a three-year term, from $2,500 on one year |
Yearly subscription | $3,588 | $27,600 on three years, $30,000 on one year |
Total commitment | One year at most | $82,800 over a three-year term |
Extra stores | Each store is a separate plan | Main store plus nine expansion stores, then $300 a month each |
High-volume pricing | Fixed plan price | A variable platform fee tied to revenue, with no published rate |
Two details change the comparison. The three-year term saves $200 a month, or $7,200 over the term, but locks in $82,800. A store that might sell, merge or replatform should price the one-year term. Each brand also needs its own contract, according to the Plus page. A company with two separate brands pays for two Plus plans, while expansion stores serve regions or channels of one brand.
Shopify does not charge for the move itself, the same page notes. Custom development through a Shopify Plus Partner, theme purchases and third-party apps are billed separately.
What the extra $24,000 a year buys over Shopify Advanced
With the three-year contract, Plus costs $2,001 a month more than Advanced on yearly billing, or $24,012 a year. This table, built from Shopify's pricing page and developer documentation, shows what that money changes:
Feature | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|
Online card rate with Shopify Payments | 2.5% plus 30 cents | 2.25% plus 30 cents |
Premium online card rate | 3.1% plus 30 cents | 2.95% plus 30 cents |
In-person card rate | 2.4% plus 10 cents | 2.3% plus 10 cents |
Fee on third-party payment providers | 0.6% | 0.2% |
Staff accounts | 15 | Unlimited |
Inventory locations | 10 | 200 |
POS Pro | $89 a month per location | 20 locations included, up to 200 with Shopify Payments |
GraphQL Admin API rate | 200 points a second | 1,000 points a second |
B2B catalogs | Up to 3 active catalogs | Unlimited, including catalogs per company |
Checkout steps | Shopify's standard checkout | Checkout UI extensions in the information, shipping and payment steps |
The API figures come from Shopify's GraphQL Admin API rate limit page. The checkout rule comes from Shopify's checkout UI extensions documentation, which says extensions for those three steps are available only to Plus stores.
What no longer requires Shopify Plus
Several reasons stores upgraded in 2022 or 2023 have gone. Check these before you count them as Plus benefits:
- Shopify Flow. The Shopify Flow help page says the app is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Grow and Advanced also get the Send HTTP Request action, and only tasks created by custom partner apps stay on Plus.
- B2B basics. Shopify's B2B features by plan puts checkout to draft, net terms, PO numbers and vaulted cards on every plan from Basic up. ACH payments in the US, quick order lists and the Trade theme are there too.
- Shopify Scripts. The Script Editor help page says Scripts was deprecated on June 30, 2026, and published scripts no longer run. Shopify points stores to Shopify Functions instead, so Scripts is no reason to upgrade.
The same B2B page puts contextual checkout and storefront changes through Shopify Markets on Advanced as well as Plus. A store weighing Plus for regional pricing should test Advanced first.
When lower card rates cover the Plus price
Plus saves 0.25 percentage points on each online card sale through Shopify Payments. To cover the $24,012 yearly premium of the three-year contract, a store needs about $9.6 million a year in those sales. On the one-year term, with a $26,412 premium, the line moves to about $10.6 million.
Online sales through Shopify Payments per year | Plus premium on a three-year term | Card fee savings on Plus | Net result of Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
$2 million | $24,012 | $5,000 | Costs $19,012 more |
$5 million | $24,012 | $12,500 | Costs $11,512 more |
$9.6 million | $24,012 | $24,000 | Breaks even |
$15 million | $24,012 | $37,500 | Saves $13,488 |
$25 million | $24,012 | $62,500 | Saves $38,488 |
Premium cards add a little: Plus charges 2.95% on them against 3.1% on Advanced, a 0.15-point saving. Stores that use a third-party payment provider reach the line sooner. The third-party fee drops from 0.6% to 0.2%, a 0.4-point saving. At that rate, Plus covers its premium at about $6 million a year in sales through the provider.
Treat the top rows with care. Higher-volume businesses can move to a variable platform fee tied to revenue, says the Plus page, and Shopify does not publish that rate. Ask for the exact fee in writing before you use the $15 million or $25 million rows to justify the contract.
Four reasons to upgrade that have nothing to do with fees
Most stores that need Plus need it for a capability, not the card rate. These four are the ones Advanced cannot match:
- Checkout logic in the information, shipping or payment steps. Think of a delivery date picker, a gift message field or a rule that hides a payment method for certain carts.
- B2B with more than three price lists, catalogs assigned to individual companies, or deposits and partial payments on large orders. Shopify lists all three as Plus-only.
- More than 10 inventory locations, or point of sale across many stores. Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations, which cost $89 a month each on Advanced.
- Heavy integrations. An ERP or warehouse system that syncs thousands of orders and stock changes an hour can hit the Advanced limit of 200 points a second. Plus allows 1,000.
Regional or channel stores of one brand add a fifth case, since Plus covers nine expansion stores before the $300 monthly charge. Headless builds on Shopify's React-based stack come at no extra cost on Plus, per the same page. Read the guide to how headless commerce works before you plan a separate front end.
Two worked examples, one for each answer
Say a skincare brand in Arizona sells $4 million a year online, all through Shopify Payments, with nine staff and one warehouse. Its checkout needs no custom steps, and it sells no wholesale. Plus would save $10,000 a year in card fees against a $24,012 premium, so it would cost $14,012 a year more. Advanced is the right plan, and the money is better spent on conversion work such as the fixes in the cart abandonment guide.
Now say a furniture retailer in Georgia sells $6 million a year: $4 million online and $2 million through 14 showrooms. It also sells to 40 interior designers on five price lists. Advanced caps it at 10 inventory locations and three B2B catalogs, so the decision is already made. The numbers agree.
- Online card savings: 0.25 points on $4 million is $10,000 a year.
- In-person card savings: 0.1 points on $2 million is $2,000 a year.
- POS Pro: 14 locations at $89 a month is $14,952 a year, included on Plus.
Those three lines total $26,952 a year against the $24,012 premium. Plus pays for itself by $2,940, before counting the B2B and location features the retailer cannot get any other way.
Hidden costs of moving to Shopify Plus
The subscription is the smallest surprise. Budget for these before you sign:
- Development to use Plus features. Checkout extensions, Functions and B2B rules are code a developer writes and maintains. At US agency rates of $100 to $149 an hour, 100 hours of setup costs $10,000 to $14,900.
- Enterprise app tiers. Some apps charge Plus stores a higher monthly price, so ask each vendor for its Plus pricing.
- The contract term. A three-year term at $2,300 a month commits $82,800, and the pricing FAQ allows cancellation only when the term ends.
- Rebuilding old Scripts. Stores that used Shopify Scripts for tiered discounts or shipping rules need that logic rewritten as Shopify Functions, since Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026.
- Migration work if you are coming from another platform. Shopify does not charge for it, but redirects, data import and testing take paid hours.
Stores moving from WooCommerce can use the WooCommerce to Shopify migration guide to size that work. The ecommerce website cost guide covers how setup hours and rates turn into a quote.
Shopify Plus alternatives at the enterprise level
Plus is not the only step up. BigCommerce's 2026 pricing update lists its Performance plan, the former Enterprise tier, from $1,499 a month. Its sales threshold is $250,000 a month, with 0.6% charged on sales above that. BigCommerce also moves Scale accounts to Performance automatically at $2 million in trailing 12-month sales. A fast-growing BigCommerce store faces the same decision, on a fixed timetable.
Above Plus, Shopify sells an enterprise tier, Commerce Components, for the largest retailers. Its GraphQL Admin API rate is 2,000 points a second, double the Plus limit. Few stores reading this need it, but the option matters if your roadmap includes a custom front end and several back-office systems.
Self-hosted WooCommerce takes no platform fee and allows any change a developer can code, at the cost of hosting, upkeep and security work. For smaller stores, the Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison covers that trade-off. The same logic holds at scale: you trade a fixed fee for an engineering budget.
Who should stay on Shopify Advanced
Stay on Advanced if your store meets four conditions. It sells under about $9.6 million a year through Shopify Payments, runs one brand from 10 or fewer locations, uses three or fewer B2B price lists, and works with the standard checkout. Advanced still gives 15 staff accounts, a 2.5% online card rate and contextual pricing through Shopify Markets.
Some stores on Advanced belong on Grow at $79 a month. Grow covers 5 staff accounts, and Advanced's 0.2-point lower card rate pays for its higher price only above $110,000 a month in online sales. Shopify's built-in AI assistant also helps smaller teams, and the Shopify Sidekick guide covers what it handles today. Revisit Plus when one of the four capability triggers appears on your 12-month plan, not before.
How to decide on Shopify Plus in five steps
- Pull 12 months of sales and split them into Shopify Payments online, in-person and third-party provider totals.
- Multiply each total by the Plus saving: 0.25 points online, 0.1 points in person and 0.4 points on third-party providers.
- Add any POS Pro fees, extra store plans and staff workarounds you pay today, then subtract the $24,012 or $26,412 premium.
- List the features from the four capability triggers that you will use in the next 12 months, with the revenue each one supports.
- Ask Shopify for a written quote that states the term, the platform fee and any variable fee, and price the development work alongside it.
If steps 3 and 4 both come out negative, stay where you are. If either one is clearly positive, the upgrade has a business case you can defend.

Frequently asked questions
Shopify Plus costs $2,300 a month on a three-year term or from $2,500 a month on a one-year term, as of October 2026. Higher-volume stores can be moved to a variable platform fee tied to revenue, and Shopify does not publish that rate.
Shopify sets no minimum revenue. On card fees alone, Plus covers its premium over Advanced at about $9.6 million a year in Shopify Payments online sales, or about $6 million through a third-party provider. Stores that need Plus-only features can justify it far below those figures.
You can move to a standard plan once your Plus term ends, since Shopify allows cancellation when the term commitment expires. Before you switch, list the Plus-only features you use, such as checkout extensions or extra B2B catalogs, because they stop working on lower plans.
Yes. Plus charges 2.25% plus 30 cents on standard online card sales through Shopify Payments, against 2.5% plus 30 cents on Advanced. The fee on third-party payment providers falls from 0.6% to 0.2%, and in-person card sales drop from 2.4% to 2.3%.
No. Shopify B2B runs on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, with net terms, checkout to draft and vaulted cards on every plan. Plus is needed for more than three active catalogs, catalogs assigned to specific companies, and deposits or partial payments.
