ChatGPT recommends a business when two things line up. Its live search finds a page that answers the buyer's exact question, and other sites it trusts name the same business for the same job. You earn both by letting OpenAI's crawler in and describing your business the same way everywhere. Then publish pages built around buyer questions and collect mentions in reviews, lists and forums.
Most people who search how to rank in ChatGPT picture a results page with ten slots. ChatGPT has no fixed list. It writes a fresh answer each time, and the businesses it names can change between two runs of the same question. The goal is to be named often, for the questions that bring in paying customers, with facts that are correct.
The Techno Mantra guides to generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization explain why AI tools cite some pages and skip others. This guide stays practical: what OpenAI's own documentation says ChatGPT reads, the steps to take in order, and how to test the result with a spreadsheet.

How ChatGPT picks which businesses to recommend
ChatGPT draws on two sources when someone asks for a business. The first is what the model learned in training, which reflects how often and how consistently the web described your business before that model was built. The second is live web search, which OpenAI says ChatGPT runs automatically when a question would benefit from current information. Requests such as "best roofing contractor in Tampa" or "accountant for Shopify sellers" give ChatGPT a reason to search, because the answer depends on current facts.
OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT describes what happens next. ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search partners, and OpenAI's help documentation names Bing as one of those providers. A question about nearby restaurants in San Francisco might go out as "top restaurants San Francisco". If memory is switched on, a saved detail such as a vegan diet can shape the rewritten query too.
How does ChatGPT answer local and shopping questions?
Location shapes local answers. ChatGPT uses an approximate location based on the user's IP address. In March 2026, OpenAI added optional device location sharing for more precise "near me" results, and it stays off until the user turns it on. OpenAI says it may pass location to trusted third-party providers of business listings. On iOS and Android the answer can include a map, and restaurant answers may show availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp.
Shopping questions follow a third path. OpenAI's shopping research help page says product results come from structured metadata, such as price and description, supplied by first-party and third-party providers, plus other third-party content. A product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the shopper's intent, and memory and custom instructions can change that judgment.
Put together, a recommendation depends on four inputs a business can influence. They are pages ChatGPT's search can reach, listings in the directories its partners draw on, reviews and articles on other sites and, for stores, product data. Every step below works on one of the four.
Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your business?
No. Paid placement exists in ChatGPT, but it sits outside the answer. OpenAI began testing ads on February 9, 2026, for logged-in US adults on the Free and Go plans. By August 2026 it had expanded them to five more countries. Its announcement on testing ads in ChatGPT states that "ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." Every ad is labeled as sponsored and kept visually separate from the answer.
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans show no ads at all. The shopping help page draws the same line for products: results are selected independently and "are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." An ad can put your offer beside an answer for some users. A place inside the answer still has to be earned through the four inputs above.
Treat any agency that promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT's answers with suspicion. OpenAI's documentation offers no paid route into answers, no submission form for websites and no ranking controls. Its publishers and developers FAQ says only that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search.
How to rank in ChatGPT in five steps
The five steps run in this order because each one depends on the step before it. A crawler block makes every content fix invisible, and mentions on other sites carry more weight when they repeat the description your own site uses.
- Let OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, reach your pages.
- Write one description of your business and repeat it on every profile.
- Publish pages that answer the exact prompts buyers type.
- Get named on the review sites, lists and forums that ChatGPT cites.
- Send a product feed to OpenAI if you sell products online.
Let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site
OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses to surface websites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." GPTBot is a separate crawler that collects training data, so you can block it and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's systems.
Check three places, because a block at any one of them removes you from search answers:
- Your robots.txt file. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for a Disallow rule under OAI-SearchBot, or a blanket rule under User-agent: * that covers your service pages.
- Your CDN or firewall. Cloudflare and similar services can block AI crawlers at the network edge, before robots.txt is ever read. These settings can be active without anyone on your team having chosen them.
- Your website builder. Shopify, Wix and Squarespace manage crawler rules through their own settings. Look for an AI crawler toggle or a robots.txt editor in the platform's SEO panel.
Two details trip people up. A page blocked in robots.txt may still appear as a bare link and title, the publishers FAQ says. Keeping a page out entirely takes a noindex tag that the crawler is allowed to read. Facts that load only through scripts, sit inside images or live in PDFs are also harder for crawlers to read than plain text. Put prices, service areas and hours in the HTML.
Can ChatGPT's agent use your booking form?
It can when the form is built with accessible markup, which matters for any business that takes bookings or quote requests online. ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's browser, reads ARIA labels and roles, the same markup screen readers use, to understand page structure, according to the same FAQ. A quote form whose fields carry proper labels is easier for an AI agent to complete on a user's behalf and easier for customers with disabilities to use. The guide to making a website ADA compliant covers that markup.
Describe your business the same way everywhere
ChatGPT can only repeat a clear description if the web gives it one. Write a single sentence that names your category, your customer, your location and one fact that proves it. Then use that sentence, or a close version, on your homepage, About page, Google Business Profile, Bing Places listing, Yelp, LinkedIn and every industry directory that lists you.
For example, say a 12-person HVAC company in Columbus, Ohio describes itself as "comfort solutions for modern living" on its homepage, "heating and cooling" on Yelp and "plumbing" on an old directory listing. A buyer who asks ChatGPT for "a furnace repair company in Columbus with same-day service" gets three conflicting signals and no stated same-day fact. After the rewrite, every profile says "Residential furnace and AC repair in Columbus and Franklin County, with same-day service on calls before 2 p.m. and a 4.8 rating from 600 Google reviews."
Match the facts as well as the wording. Name, address, phone number, hours, service area and price ranges should be identical across every profile. ChatGPT may draw on third-party business listings for local answers, OpenAI's help page says. A listing with old hours can become the hours ChatGPT repeats, and a buyer who calls a closed office rarely calls twice.
Google Business Profile belongs on the list even though ChatGPT is an OpenAI product, because the same name, address and hours get copied across directories, map apps and review sites. The local SEO guide covers profile setup and citation cleanup step by step.
Publish a page for each question buyers ask
Buyers type full requests into ChatGPT, and many carry a budget, a city and a constraint inside them. Start by writing down 20 prompts a buyer would type before contacting you. Pull them from sales calls, inquiry forms, quote requests and the questions your team answers every week. Each prompt should name a need, a place or a limit, as in "commercial cleaning company in Dallas that works nights" or "bookkeeper for a restaurant with two locations".
Then check whether a page on your site answers each prompt directly. Most small business sites have one Services page that lists ten services in a sentence each, and that page cannot answer a specific question about any of them. ChatGPT's search reads pages and lifts the passages that fit the question. A page for each service you sell most, each main location and each common comparison gives it a passage to lift.
How do you write a page ChatGPT will quote?
Lead with the answer. The Ahrefs study of how ChatGPT chooses sources cites Kevin Indig's analysis of 1.2 million ChatGPT citations. It found 44.2% came from the first 30% of a page, against 24.7% from the final third. In practice, that means four habits:
- The first two sentences under each heading answer that heading, with a number where one exists.
- Price ranges, service areas, response times and minimum order sizes appear as text, with a visible "last updated" date.
- A short FAQ covers the follow-up questions from your sales calls.
- Comparison pages name the alternatives fairly, including the cases where a competitor or a do-it-yourself option fits better.
A pricing page is the most useful single page to add. Buyers ask ChatGPT what things cost, and a page that says "call for pricing" gives the model nothing to cite on cost. Publish ranges and the factors that move them, even if the final quote needs a site visit. If you are budgeting for outside help, the guide to what SEO costs per month in 2026 shows the typical ranges.
Get named on the sites ChatGPT reads
Third-party mentions are the step most small businesses skip, and the one that large studies tie most closely to who gets named. In the same Ahrefs research, Reddit was the most-cited domain in ChatGPT responses, with 847,338 citations, ahead of Wikipedia at 431,710. "Best of" list articles took an average 43.83% share of citations, against 14.34% for standard blog posts. Across 75,000 brands, mentions on YouTube correlated with ChatGPT visibility more strongly than any other factor Ahrefs measured.
Those figures describe correlation across large brands, so read them as a map of where to show up rather than a guarantee. For a small business, the practical list is shorter:
- Reviews on the two or three platforms buyers in your field check, with replies that name the service delivered. OpenAI's shopping page says ChatGPT may summarize reviews from public websites.
- Local and trade "best of" lists, chamber of commerce directories and association member pages.
- Local press and podcasts. A quoted comment in a regional business journal names you on a site with its own authority.
- Reddit and industry forums. Answer questions in city and trade communities under a disclosed account, and follow each community's self-promotion rules.
- Partner pages. Ask each supplier, software vendor and certification body you work with whether it lists approved installers, resellers or partners.
- YouTube. A handful of short videos that answer common customer questions, with your business name said aloud and written in the description.
How do you ask for reviews without breaking FTC rules?
Ask every customer, and tie nothing to what they write. The Federal Trade Commission's final rule on fake reviews was announced in August 2024. It bans buying or selling fake reviews, incentives conditioned on a positive or negative review and undisclosed reviews from company insiders. It also lets the FTC seek civil penalties against knowing violators. Never write reviews for yourself or ask staff to post them without saying who they are. This is general information, not legal advice.
Send product data if you sell online
Online stores have a direct route that service businesses lack. OpenAI accepts product data through its merchant program for ChatGPT. As of October 2026, the program page says Shopify and Etsy sellers already have their catalogs integrated, while other merchants apply through a form and join a waitlist. Shopping is available only in the US, and OpenAI charges no fees on the resulting purchases. OpenAI has also moved away from its standalone Instant Checkout, so buyers complete orders on the merchant's own site or app.
The ChatGPT product feed specification lists nine required fields: item ID, title, description, brand, seller name, price, availability, product URL and a main image. Review count and star rating are optional. Two habits keep a feed useful. Write titles and descriptions as plain facts such as size, material and compatibility. Update the feed whenever a price or stock level changes, because a sale date inside the feed does not switch the price for you.
Say a Shopify store sells 300 replacement parts for commercial espresso machines. Its catalog already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify, so the work sits in the data. A title such as "Group head gasket, 8.5 mm, fits Model A and Model B" answers a compatibility question that "Premium gasket" cannot. That is the question a cafe owner with a leaking machine asks.
How to check whether ChatGPT recommends you
Testing has to account for variation. Ahrefs cites SparkToro research that found less than a 1 in 100 chance of ChatGPT giving the same list of brands twice when asked the same question 100 times. One run of one prompt tells you almost nothing, so run each prompt several times and count how often you appear.
- Take the 20 buyer prompts you wrote down when planning your pages.
- Run each prompt five times in a logged-out browser window, so saved memories do not shape the query. For local prompts, put the city in the prompt.
- Record for each run whether you were named, your position in the list, which competitors were named and which sources were cited.
- Score your recommendation rate as runs that name you divided by total runs.
- In Google Analytics, filter sessions by the source chatgpt.com. OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from ChatGPT search, so these visits arrive labeled.
- Repeat on the first working day of each month with the same prompts.
What does a recommendation test look like in practice?
Say the Columbus HVAC company runs its 20 prompts five times each, 100 answers in total. It is named in 9, and one competitor is named in 41. The cited sources show why: the competitor appears in two local "best HVAC" lists and a city subreddit thread, and its pricing page states a diagnostic fee.
Over the next 90 days the company publishes a pricing page and a same-day service page, fixes its Yelp category and earns a place on one local list. A score of 22 out of 100 at the next test would mean the rate more than doubled, and the source list would show which change ChatGPT picked up.
Give each change three monthly tests before you judge it, since answers move from run to run and pages wait on the next crawl. The guide to measuring AI citations covers the Google and Bing reports that sit beside this spreadsheet.
How long each change takes to show up
OpenAI publishes one timing figure, for crawler rules, and leaves the rest unstated. Plan around the dependencies in this table.
Change you make | When ChatGPT can use it |
|---|---|
Allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt | About 24 hours, per OpenAI's crawler documentation |
Rewriting or adding a page on your site | After OAI-SearchBot or a search partner recrawls it; no published timeline |
Fixing a listing or earning a new mention | After that third-party page is recrawled |
Updating a product feed | When the updated feed is processed, so send changes as prices and stock move |
Facts the model learned in training | Only when OpenAI releases a model trained on newer data |
What to do when ChatGPT gets your business wrong
ChatGPT sometimes states old hours, a closed location, a price from two years ago or a service you dropped. OpenAI offers no form for a business to edit an answer. Its help page warns that search results and citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." The fix is to correct the sources the answer came from.
- Open the sources list under the wrong answer and note which pages it cited.
- Fix your own page first, with the correct fact in plain text near the top and a visible update date.
- Update every listing and profile that carries the old fact, starting with any that ChatGPT cited.
- Ask the owner of an outdated third-party article to correct it, and send the source for the new fact.
- Re-run the same prompt in your next monthly test and check whether the sources changed.
Answers that come from the model's training, with no sources listed, change more slowly. They update when OpenAI releases a model trained on newer data. For that reason, most small businesses are better off allowing GPTBot as well as OAI-SearchBot, so the corrected facts on their own site can reach future models. Block GPTBot only if keeping your content out of AI training matters more to you than how those models describe your business.
Which steps to start with, by business type
The five steps apply to every business, but where the effort goes first depends on how customers buy. Use this table to pick the first month of work.
Business type | Sources worth the most effort | First three actions |
|---|---|---|
Local service business, such as HVAC, dental or legal | Business listings, reviews, local "best of" lists, location pages | Fix listing categories and hours; publish a service and pricing page for each main location; ask every customer for a review |
B2B service firm or agency | Comparison articles, trade directories, partner pages, forums | Publish price ranges and comparison pages; get listed in trade directories and partner pages; answer buyer questions in industry forums |
Online store | Product feed data, product reviews, gift guides and roundups | Confirm the Shopify or Etsy integration or apply for a direct feed; rewrite product titles as facts; pitch products to review sites |
Software or app company | Software review sites, Reddit, YouTube, public documentation | Make pricing and integrations public; collect reviews on the main software review sites; publish short how-to videos |
Start this week with two checks that cost nothing. Confirm in robots.txt and your CDN settings that OAI-SearchBot is allowed, then run your five most valuable buyer prompts five times each to set a baseline.

Frequently asked questions
ChatGPT runs its own search with partner providers. OpenAI's help documentation says it may share disassociated search queries with third-party search providers such as Bing, and it crawls sites with OAI-SearchBot. Strong Google rankings help indirectly, because a page that ranks well gets read, linked and quoted by more sites.
OpenAI's publisher documentation does not list schema markup as a requirement for ChatGPT search. Its shopping results do read structured product data such as price and description. Add accurate schema for Google's rich results and cleaner data, and do not expect it to replace clear pages and outside mentions.
Crawler access changes take about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's systems, according to its documentation. Content and listing changes show up after ChatGPT's search reads the updated pages, and OpenAI publishes no timeline for that. Run monthly tests for at least three months before you judge the result.
Block GPTBot only if keeping your content out of OpenAI's model training matters more than how future models describe you. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which relies on OAI-SearchBot. For most small businesses, allowing both crawlers is the better choice.
Yes, through live search. A new business with a crawlable site, consistent listings, a clear page for each service and a first set of reviews can be found when ChatGPT searches. The model's trained knowledge will not include it until a newer model is released, so search is the route in during the first year.
