Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your content quoted when AI tools such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot answer a question. SEO earns you a ranked link on a results page, and AEO earns you a place inside the answer itself. That place can be a cited link or a mention of your business by name.

AI answers are now big enough to show up in your traffic. At its I/O conference in May 2026, Google said AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode has passed 1 billion. People also click less when an AI summary appears. A Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025 found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary. Without one, they clicked on 15%.

Most of what gets sold as AEO is good SEO under a new name, and that is fine. What changes is the unit you compete with. Answer engines lift passages from a page, so every answer a buyer cares about has to make sense on its own.

How answer engine optimization works

An answer engine reads a question and runs one or more web searches behind the scenes. It breaks the pages it finds into short passages and writes a reply from the ones it trusts most, with links to some of them. AEO is the set of habits that make your passages the ones it picks.

The engine has to be allowed in

Eligibility comes first. Google's documentation on AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that sites which block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

It searches more than once

Google describes a "query fan-out" technique: AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics before writing a response. The question "is a CRM worth it for a 10-person sales team" can set off separate searches on CRM cost, setup time and staff adoption. A page that answers only the headline question competes in one of those searches. A page that also covers cost, setup and the usual objection can be pulled in three times.

It reads passages, not whole pages

Microsoft explained in an October 2025 post on AI search answers that its systems parse a page into smaller pieces. The system then ranks those pieces and assembles an answer that can mix several sources. Its advice to writers is blunt: sentences should make sense when pulled out of context. A paragraph that opens with "as mentioned above, this is why it matters" means nothing on its own, so it never gets quoted.

It cites only a few sources

Pew found that people clicked a link inside the AI summary itself on just 1% of visits. The citation still has value: it puts your name in front of a buyer while they are deciding, even if they never click.

AEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays the same

AEO and SEO share one foundation: a crawlable, indexed site with accurate, useful content. The difference is the target. SEO aims for a top-10 ranking and a click. AEO aims to be one of the few sources an AI answer cites, which rewards short, self-contained answers to long and specific questions.

The overlap is bigger than most AEO pitches admit. Google's documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says no special schema.org markup and no new "AI text files" are needed. If a page is slow, blocked, thin or missing from the index, no AEO tactic will rescue it. Think of AEO as the top floor of a building whose foundation is technical SEO: nobody builds the top floor first.

The writing is what changes. Plenty of SEO copy was padded to reach a word count or repeat a search term. Answer engines skip the padding and look for the sentence that answers the question. A good target is an answer of 40 to 60 words placed directly under the question, long enough to be complete and short enough to lift whole. If your current SEO strategy already answers buyer questions this way, you are most of the way there.

AEO for business starts with access and questions

Fix access before you write anything new. Confirm that Google, Bing and ChatGPT's crawler can reach your pages. Then list the 20 to 30 questions buyers ask before they buy, and rewrite your pages so each one gets a direct answer in two sentences. None of this needs a new budget line.

Check that answer engines can reach you

Begin in Google Search Console. Google added a setting in 2026 that keeps a site out of AI Overviews and AI Mode altogether. Confirm nobody has switched it off. Then search your page code for nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet tags, which a developer may have added years ago. Google uses those controls to limit what its AI features can show.

Next, open robots.txt. OpenAI treats OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot, its training crawler, so you can block training and still appear in ChatGPT search. According to OpenAI, a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its systems.

List the questions buyers actually ask

Pull them from sales calls, enquiry emails, chat transcripts and the "People also ask" box in Google. Aim for 20 to 30, and strip any customer names or details before they go into a shared document. Pew found that 60% of Google searches starting with a question word, such as how, what or why, produced an AI answer. Across all searches the figure was 18%. A bookkeeping firm, for example, might find its buyers ask "how much does bookkeeping cost for a business with 50 invoices a month" instead of typing "bookkeeping services".

Answer each question in two sentences

Put the question in a heading and the answer directly under it. The first sentence gives the answer. The second adds the condition that changes it, and everything after that is detail for the reader who wants more. Here is the difference on a heating engineer's service page.

Before: "Fast, reliable boiler servicing across the city, from a team you can trust."

After: "A standard boiler service takes about 45 minutes and costs the fixed price listed on this page. Most visits can be booked within three working days."

The second version can be quoted word for word in an answer to "how long does a boiler service take". The first cannot be quoted for anything.

Keep the facts in plain text

Microsoft's guidance lists the places where answer engines struggle: content hidden in tabs or expandable menus, PDFs, and information that only exists inside images. Prices, service areas, opening hours, turnaround times and qualifications belong in normal HTML text on the page. A website design that tucks them behind sliders may look tidy and still leave the answer engine with nothing to use.

Get mentioned on sites you do not own

Your own site is only part of what answer engines read. In Pew's sample, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources linked in AI summaries, and government sites made up 6%. For most businesses the practical version is smaller: accurate business profiles, reviews where your buyers look, industry directory listings and the occasional trade-press interview. An outdated directory listing is one more page an answer engine might read, so correct the old ones first.

How to tell whether AEO is working

Measure AEO with four signals. Check impressions in Search Console's Generative AI report and referral visits from AI tools in your analytics. Test your buyer questions in the main answer engines every month, and ask new leads where they found you. Rankings alone will not tell you, because the pages an AI answer cites are not always the pages ranked first.

Google added the Generative AI performance report to Search Console in 2026 and finished rolling it out to all sites worldwide on 31 August. Google's help page for the report explains that it shows impressions for your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, date and device. It shows no clicks, so read it as a visibility count rather than a traffic report.

For traffic, build a segment in your analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. The numbers will be small at first. The trend matters more than the size.

No report does the manual check for you. Once a month, ask the questions from your list in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Note whether your business is named or linked, and who is named instead. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option in the "how did you hear about us" field on your enquiry form. After three months you will know which questions you win and which ones a competitor owns.

What happens if you ignore AEO

Ignoring AEO will not cost you rankings overnight. It costs you the clicks above the rankings. When the AI answers the question at the top of the page, fewer people scroll to the links below it. The businesses named inside the answer get the attention a good ranking used to bring.

Consider the arithmetic. A consultancy's guide ranks third for a question about project costs and brings in 400 visits a month. If an AI summary starts appearing on that search and Pew's click pattern holds, those 400 visits drop to roughly 213. The ranking does not change at all. Pew also found that people ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% of pages without one.

Ignoring it is survivable for some businesses. Pew found AI summaries on only 8% of one- or two-word searches. Someone typing your brand name or a short phrase like "emergency plumber" still sees a familiar page of links. If nearly all your leads come from branded searches, referrals or paid ads, AEO can wait a quarter. If your buyers research before they call, it cannot. Every month you hold off, their questions about cost and timelines get answered from someone else's pages.

The cheapest answer engine optimization work happens on pages you already have. Take your five most-visited service pages and put the question each one answers in a heading. Then rewrite the first two sentences until they make sense read on their own. The clearest answer is the one that gets quoted.

Frequently asked questions

No. Google says a page must already be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no extra requirements beyond that. AEO changes how you write and measure, while the technical SEO underneath stays the same.

In practice, almost none. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO both describe getting content cited in AI-written answers, and many guides use the two terms interchangeably. The steps that help with one help with the other.

Not for Google: its documentation says no special schema.org markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Microsoft says structured data helps its AI systems classify content such as products, reviews, FAQs and events, so accurate markup is still worth adding for Bing and Copilot.

Access fixes are quick: OpenAI says a robots.txt change for its search crawler takes about 24 hours to reach its systems. Content changes depend on how fast engines recrawl your pages, so review Search Console's Generative AI report and your manual checks once a month, not every week.

Yes. Google Search Console, your analytics and a monthly manual check of your buyers' questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cover the basics at no cost. Paid AI visibility trackers start to save time once you track more than a few dozen questions.
