ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings shown below a ChatGPT answer when OpenAI's system judges a product or service relevant to the conversation, and advertisers buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager, paying per click or per thousand views. For most businesses, the right answer to whether to advertise there is a small, fully tracked test before any real budget moves: ads only started on 9 February 2026, and nobody has years of performance data yet.

Uptake has been quick. In its 21 October 2026 expansion update, OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns, that ChatGPT Ads now covers 89 countries, and that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week.

Where ChatGPT ads appear and who sees them

An ad shows up as one labelled unit below a ChatGPT response, with the advertiser's name, logo, a headline, a short description, an image and a link to your landing page.

The audience is narrower than the headline figure suggests. According to OpenAI's help centre, ads appear only for users on the Free and low-cost Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Ads are kept away from conversations about personal health, mental health and politics.

That plan rule matters for B2B sellers. A finance director using ChatGPT through a company Business or Enterprise workspace will never see your ad, no matter how relevant the chat.

Self-serve access is open in the US, UK, India, Australia, Canada, the UAE and much of Europe and Latin America, as long as the billed business is based in a listed country.

How ChatGPT matches ads to a conversation

Matching runs on context rather than keyword lists. The system reads the context and intent of the current chat, then weighs it against your landing page, ad title, ad copy and any context hints you add at ad group level. Past chats and memory can count too when a user has ad personalisation on.

Context hints describe the conversations, topics or keywords where your offer fits. They are not exact-match keywords, OpenAI says, and they do not guarantee delivery in a given chat. So your landing page is part of your targeting: a vague page gives the system less to match against.

Consider someone asking ChatGPT to compare project tools for a 12-person design studio. A vendor whose page names small studios and shows its pricing is a far clearer match than one whose page is a generic slogan.

When several ads qualify, OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so relevance counts alongside your bid.

How CPC bidding and conversion tracking work in Ads Manager

Ads Manager, in beta since 5 May 2026, offers three campaign objectives. OpenAI's advertiser basics guide lists Views, billed per thousand impressions, Clicks, billed per valid click, and Conversions, where delivery aims at one chosen conversion event but you still pay for clicks or impressions, never per conversion.

You set a maximum bid for each ad group. OpenAI's recommended starting point for Clicks campaigns is a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.

Tracking needs the OpenAI Pixel on your site, the Conversions API from your server, or both. When the same conversion goes through both, give it the same event ID so it is counted once. OpenAI also adds a click reference called oppref to the end of your landing page URL: keep it intact through redirects so a later purchase or form submission can be tied back to the ad click.

UTM parameters work too, so ChatGPT traffic shows up in the analytics you already use. Expect some lag: impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, while spend figures can trail by 7 to 8 hours.

Attribution is simpler for HubSpot users. HubSpot says it is the first CRM to integrate with ChatGPT Ads: ad traffic lands on a HubSpot page, and each new contact enters a workflow and is attributed alongside your other channels.

Should your business test ChatGPT ads?

A test makes sense when your buyers describe a problem and compare options before they buy, as they do with software, professional services, courses, travel and higher-priced products. You also need a landing page that answers what a buyer would ask ChatGPT about price, fit and how you differ, tracking that already works, and a few hundred dollars you can spend without a guaranteed return.

Wait if most of your buyers use ChatGPT on paid or work plans, or if you need exact keyword control. Health and financial services advertisers face strict eligibility rules, and political advertising is not allowed at all.

Fund the test with new money rather than cutting a search campaign that already pays for itself. One published test shows why: on 8 September 2026, the lead generation firm Cleverly reported 57 clicks in Ads Manager against fewer than 20 visits in Google Analytics on the same UTM-tagged campaign, with zero conversions so far.

Sizing a ChatGPT ads test budget

Work backwards from the clicks you need. At a $4 maximum bid, a $600 budget buys at least 150 clicks, and possibly more, because a second-price auction can charge less than your maximum. If your site turns 3% of paid visitors into leads, 150 clicks gives you four or five leads: enough to judge lead quality, too few to judge cost per lead with confidence.

  1. Install the Pixel and the Conversions API, send a test event, and confirm it appears in Ads Manager.
  2. Add UTM parameters and check that oppref survives every redirect.
  3. Context hints should read like real buyer conversations, such as comparing payroll software for a 20-person company.
  4. Start on the Clicks objective at $3 to $5. Once conversion events are arriving, launch a new Conversions campaign, because the objective cannot be changed after a campaign is created.
  5. Run for at least four weeks and compare Ads Manager, your analytics and your CRM every week.

Set the stop rule before launch. If ChatGPT leads are no better than your search leads after four weeks, pause and move the money back. Judge the test in your CRM, not in the ad dashboard.
