Pick by where your team already works. Gemini is the default for Google Workspace companies, because Business Standard at $14 a user includes it. ChatGPT Business suits teams that want one general assistant with image generation, deep research and Codex in the plan. Claude suits long documents, careful writing and coding. All three business plans start near $20 a user a month and exclude your data from training by default.

That is the short answer to ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini as of October 2026. Every price and policy below comes from the vendors' own pages.

Read the table by your hardest constraint first. A Workspace company already owns Gemini. If a client contract names ISO certification, the answer is an Enterprise plan, whatever the vendor. Two heavy writers on a team call for premium seats before any vendor switch.

What are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

All three are assistants built on large language models, sold three ways: a chat app for individuals, a business plan for teams and an API for developers. ChatGPT comes from OpenAI, Claude from Anthropic and Gemini from Google.

Each vendor runs a family of models at different prices. OpenAI's current API lineup is gpt-6-astra at the top, gpt-6.1-sol in the middle and gpt-6-luna for low-cost volume. Anthropic sells Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, with Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 priced above them. Google sells Gemini 4 Argon as its flagship and a range of Flash and Flash-Lite models for speed.

The business apps choose models for you, while the API lets you choose per task. A verdict about the chat app says little about which API model suits a customer-facing bot.

Workspace prices cover email, storage and meetings as well as Gemini, so the AI is effectively bundled. Google also lists a 50 percent introductory discount from November 8, 2026 to February 8, 2027. The math in this guide leaves it out.

What changed for business AI plans in 2026

Several shifts this year change how the three compare, and older comparison articles miss most of them.

  • Seat prices converged. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both list $20 a month on annual billing and $25 monthly for a standard seat.
  • Premium seats arrived. Both now sell a $100 seat with 5 times the standard usage, so heavy users no longer force a whole team onto a bigger plan.
  • Usage-based enterprise pricing appeared. Claude Enterprise lists $20 a seat plus usage billed at API rates, which rewards teams with a few heavy users.
  • Context windows leveled at about 1 million tokens across the three flagships.
  • API prices are moving. Google lists Gemini 4 Argon input doubling to $4 per million tokens on December 1, 2026, and OpenAI says it is winding down its fine-tuning platform for new users.

With seat prices matched and context windows level, fit with your existing tools and your own pilot scores decide the choice.

Which one keeps your business data private?

On business plans, all three say they do not train models on your content by default. ChatGPT Business carries the line "no training on your business data by default." Claude Team lists "no model training on your content by default." Google's Workspace generative AI privacy hub says content is not human reviewed or used for model training outside your domain without permission. It adds that existing Workspace protections apply automatically.

The risk sits elsewhere. Personal plans such as ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, which costs $17 a month on annual billing, are sold to individuals under different terms. Staff who paste client files into a personal account are not covered by the business plan. The fix is a written rule. Company data goes only into the company workspace, signed in with company SSO, and personal accounts are blocked on work devices.

Compliance features split by tier. ChatGPT Business includes SOC 2 Type 2, while ISO 27001 certification, role-based access controls, SCIM and data residency sit in ChatGPT Enterprise. If a client contract names a certification or a data region, check the exact plan before buying. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm requirements with your counsel.

Gemini in Workspace

Already inside Gmail, Docs and Meet, with no separate AI seat to buy

Business Starter lacks Gemini in Docs, so full use needs Business Standard at $14

None of the three is weak enough to rule out. The practical difference is switching cost. Gemini needs no new account for a Workspace company, while ChatGPT and Claude need seats, sign-in setup and a short training session per team.

Which AI fits the tools your team already uses?

Tool fit decides adoption more than model quality. A tool that sits inside the inbox gets used daily, while a separate tab gets used when someone remembers it.

  • Google Workspace companies get Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Meet on Business Standard and above. For most of them, Gemini is the first tool to switch on because it is already paid for.
  • Microsoft 365 or mixed-stack teams do well with ChatGPT Business, which lists connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365.
  • Teams that write long reports, contracts or code get the most from Claude Team, which bundles Claude Code and Claude Cowork and lets admins control connectors.
  • Teams that want research, data analysis and image work in one app also fit ChatGPT Business. Its plan lists deep research, data analysis, image generation and Codex.

For a 15-person team, the difference in seat cost between ChatGPT and Claude is zero. The difference in hours saved depends on which one people open without being told to, so let the pilot below decide.

Which is better for writing, analysis and coding?

Vendor benchmarks change with every release and rarely match a small business's work. Treat these as starting points to test, based on how each vendor positions its current models.

Gemini Flash or a small OpenAI or Claude model

Small models cost a fraction of flagships per token

Pick a winner for each task. A firm that drafts proposals in Claude and handles inbox work in Gemini is using both well, as long as each tool has a clear job.

Context windows and long documents in 2026

A context window is how much text a model can read in one request. In October 2026 the flagships are level. OpenAI lists gpt-6.1-sol at 1,050,000 tokens with 128,000 output tokens. Anthropic lists 1M tokens for Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Google's model list describes Gemini 4 Argon with a unified 1M context window.

Window size is no longer a reason to pick one vendor. What still differs is how well each model uses a long document, and that is easy to test. Give each tool the same 80-page contract and ask five questions whose answers sit on specific pages. Score how many answers cite the right page.

Knowledge cutoffs differ too. OpenAI lists April 30, 2026 for gpt-6.1-sol and Anthropic lists June 2026 for its 5.5 models. For anything after those dates, the tool needs web search or your own documents.

API pricing if you build on top of them

Apps, chatbots and automations use the APIs, billed per million tokens. Standard rates below are from the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google pricing pages as of October 2026.

Strong mid-tier model

gpt-6.1-sol, $2 / $10

Claude Opus 5.5, $4 / $20; Sonnet 5.5, $2 / $10

Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview, $2 / $12

Fast low-cost model

gpt-6-luna, $0.10 / $0.50

At these prices, model choice moves an API bill by cents per conversation, while build and upkeep hours move it by thousands. The guides to AI chatbot development cost and AI app development cost work through both with real volumes. Build so the model can be swapped by configuration, because the cheapest good model changes every few months.

The best chat app and the best API model for your task can differ

Most small businesses should start with one tool for everyone and a second tool for one or two roles. Buying all three for every employee costs about $54 a user a month on Workspace plus two business plans, and nobody uses three assistants well. If two tools tie in the pilot, pick the one already inside your daily software, because adoption beats a small quality edge.

Is a $20 AI seat worth it for every employee?

Measure each seat against the time it saves. A $20 seat pays for itself if it saves an employee about 35 minutes a month at a $35 hourly wage. One proposal section drafted in 10 minutes instead of 45 covers the month on its own.

The seats that waste money belong to people who never open the tool. Assign seats by role after the pilot, starting with staff who write, research or summarize daily. Field technicians, drivers and warehouse staff are better served by one shared assistant on a tablet than by individual seats.

Check usage after 60 days. If a seat shows fewer than four sessions a week, reassign it before the annual renewal.

How to run a two-week pilot before you commit

  1. Pick 20 real tasks from the last month, such as a client email, a proposal section, a spreadsheet question and a policy summary.
  2. Give 3 to 5 staff a business-plan seat on each tool you are testing. Monthly billing keeps the cost to one month.
  3. Run every task through each tool with the same prompt and the same files.
  4. Score each answer from 1 to 5 for accuracy, editing time and tone, without showing which tool wrote it.
  5. Track which tool each person opens unprompted in week two.
  6. Total the scores by task type and pick the winner for each type.
  7. Buy annual seats only for the winners, and write the data rule before rollout.

A five-person pilot on two monthly plans costs $250 for ChatGPT Business and Claude Team together. That is small next to a year of the wrong tool for the whole team.

Rules to set before you roll out any AI assistant

Whichever tool wins, write a one-page rule set before the first seat goes live. Rules longer than a page do not get read.

  • Company data goes only into the company workspace, never a personal account.
  • Passwords, payment card numbers and patient records never go in unless your plan and contracts cover them.
  • A person checks every AI draft before it reaches a client, and that person owns the result.
  • Prompts that work go into a shared document, so one good idea reaches the whole team.
  • Seat usage gets reviewed monthly, and unused seats are reassigned or canceled.

The checking rule matters most. AI tools still state wrong facts with confidence, and a client who catches one wrong figure in a proposal remembers it longer than ten right ones.

Worked example: a 15-person firm choosing its AI stack

Say a 15-person accounting firm in Illinois already pays for Google Workspace Business Standard at $14 a user. Gemini comes with it, so the firm switches it on for everyone first.

  • The pilot shows Claude wins proposal and memo drafting for 4 partners. Claude Team standard seats on annual billing cost $80 a month, or $960 a year.
  • One partner hits usage limits daily and moves to a premium seat at $100 a month, so the Claude line becomes $160 a month.
  • ChatGPT loses the pilot for this firm, so nobody gets a seat. Adding it for all 15 would have cost $3,600 a year.

Total added AI spend is $1,920 a year on top of Workspace. If the firm later builds a client portal assistant, it should test API models separately. Its visibility inside AI answers matters too, and the guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT covers that side.

Run the 20-task pilot before your next renewal date, because annual seats lock in the choice for a year. For help setting up the pilot or building an assistant on OpenAI, Claude or Gemini, Techno Mantra does that work through its AI development service. Send your task list through the contact page or to info@technomantraa.com, and every inquiry gets a reply within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

Claude is the stronger starting point for long documents, careful writing and coding, while ChatGPT covers more general tasks in one app, including image generation and voice. Seat prices are the same at $20 a user a month on annual billing, so run your own tasks through both before choosing.

Gemini is included in Google Workspace business plans rather than sold as a separate seat. Business Starter at $7 a user includes the Gemini app and Gemini in Gmail, and Business Standard at $14 adds Gemini in Docs, Meet and other apps, as of October 2026.

Not on their business plans by default. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both state no training on business content by default, and Google says Workspace content is not used for model training outside your domain without permission. Personal accounts can follow different terms.

Yes, and many should. A common setup is one assistant for everyone, such as Gemini inside Workspace, plus a few seats of a second tool for roles where it tested better, such as proposal writing or coding.

Both start at 2 users. ChatGPT Business is listed for teams of 2 to 200 and Claude Team for teams of 2 to 150, while Claude Enterprise has a 20-seat minimum on annual billing.
